Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
