American Pharmacy Retailer Rite Aid Shuts Down Its Last Locations
This prominent American pharmacy chain Rite Aid has confirmed the closing of its final stores.
On Saturday, the company's website was replaced with a message stating: "All Rite Aid locations have currently closed. We thank our dedicated customers for their many years of patronage." The site also provided a link for patrons to request their pharmacy files.
Founded in 1962, the firm was once a major drugstore chains in the country. In its heyday, Rite Aid had up to 5,000 stores.
But in recent years, the company encountered economic challenges and a Justice Department investigation. Recent data showed less than 100 locations remained.
Rite Aid had entered Chapter 11 in October 2023 and then in May 2025.
The company also encountered legal troubles over its involvement in the opioid crisis. In 2022, Rite Aid paid as much as $30 million to resolve legal claims alleging it contributed to the flow of painkillers in the United States.
The following year, in its 2023 bankruptcy submission, the firm indicated that restructuring would help it "settle litigation disputes."
Rite Aid also encountered a Justice Department lawsuit in which authorities alleged the company's stores processed illegal orders for powerful painkillers. The firm agreed to settle in mid-2024.
Additional US pharmacy retailers have likewise been closing outlets across the country, though different factors have been mentioned.
From 2021 onward, CVS has closed more than 1,000 locations as part of a longer term move.
In a similar vein, Walgreens, which was recently acquired by investment group Sycamore Partners, closed 500 stores in the last twelve months.
Experts have expressed concerns about expanding "drugstore dead zones" in the US, where millions of people live lacking a pharmacy close by and must commute to have medications dispensed.
