BBC Journalists Banned from Wearing BLM T-shirts in Workplace, States Director General
The BBC's chief executive has stated that journalists cannot wear clothing endorsing the anti-racist movement BLM while in the workplace.
Neutrality Concerns for Reporters
The director general emphasized that while the BBC stands against racial discrimination, it is "inappropriate for a journalist who may be reporting on that issue to be campaigning in that way."
"You cannot have any assumption about where people are in terms of politics. You leave it at the door, and your religion is journalism in the BBC. Let me emphasize: the problem I’ve got is people react quite chemically to that."
He added, "Therefore, one cannot come into the workplace with a Black Lives Matter T-shirt on. We remain completely committed against racial prejudice in any way."
Personal Perspectives on Current Issues
The director general shared his individual perspectives, stating, "Personally, I consider some of the hostility in society at the moment utterly abhorrent, personally, deeply disturbing, but that is a movement that has politicised objectives. As a result, it is not appropriate for a journalist who may be reporting on that issue to be advocating in that manner."
He admitted that "for certain individuals joining the BBC, that is a particularly challenging thing to agree with. And it has not been an simple thing to implement this policy, and we wrestle with it constantly."
Parallels with Partisan Campaigning
Speaking about diversity and impartiality at the broadcasting organization, Davie also made a comparison with neutrality when reporting on mainstream political campaigning.
"I am absolutely convinced that if you walk into the BBC workplace, you cannot be holding a political candidate cup when you approach the vote – absolutely not, that’s simply not acceptable," he stated.
Priorities for the Broadcasting Corporation
Davie also mentioned that his "number one priority" was "trying to navigate a course where you are impartial" and that required "aspects of inclusion", adding that "socioeconomic diversity" was something that "had not received sufficient discussion adequately."
He continued, "It is absolutely a significant challenge, and I’m receiving questions: ‘Why are you giving a voice to Reform?’, ‘Why are you taking this approach?’ We’re not giving a voice, we’re covering – covering what the public are concerned about, covering the reality of what individuals believe."
Individual Security Issues
Davie was also asked about whether he felt safe when he had been shouted at and people had invaded his privacy.
He answered, "This work requires courage; these positions in public life today, frankly, they are really quite challenging. I’m no great Californian hippy, but you must look after yourself, you really have to."
