Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

The blast occurred as police and firefighters entered the property near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was found not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
