New Year's Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Across the UK
Forecasters are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Proceed Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are expected to be low, meaning warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
Temperatures Set to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Alerts Released
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely essential.
