Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a congressional proceeding.

His lawyer submitted the plea on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the legal matter terminated for multiple causes including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was indicted just days after Donald Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they planned to submit several legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a trial, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly assigned to handle the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under influence from the former president after his investigation into another opponent - the New York official - failed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.

Following the reading to the court recite his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first administration as president. At the moment, he was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

While in office, the director triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys assert the former director lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not authorized a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets data about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was innocent and accused Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"We have known for years that there are costs to standing up to the former president," he stated. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."

"I am not guilty," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Trump shared on online platforms demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and others.
