Progressive Congressional Contender Indicted Over Windy City ICE Protests
Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive hopeful running for the House of Representatives, faces federal charges over charges stemming from her participation in protests outside an ICE processing facility near Chicago last fall.
Details of the Indictment
Federal court documents, submitted recently, allege that the 26-year old American of Palestinian descent political figure along with five others “physically hindered and impeded” an officer that was “compelled to proceed very slowly” to avoid injuring any of the conspirators.
Abughazaleh, campaigning for Illinois’s ninth congressional district, was charged with conspiracy to forcibly impede or injure a federal agent and hindering the agent during the execution of their duties.
Alleged Actions During Protest
According to the indictment, those involved “conspired with one another and others” to stop through intimidation and force, a federal law enforcement officer, from discharging the duties of his office.
It alleged the candidate, along with the other individuals, “banged aggressively” on the agent’s vehicle, “gathered closely around the front and side” of the car and also “pushed against the vehicle to hinder and impede its movement”.
The charging documents state that the group etched the word “pig” on to the vehicle and damaged a side mirror and rear wiper.
It also alleged that Abughazaleh specifically “positioned herself with others in front of the official car”, and, placing her hands on the hood, leaned against the vehicle while staying directly in the car’s way, obstructing and blocking the officer.
Response from the Candidate
After the charges were filed, Abughazaleh, recognized for her substantial online following, labeled the charges “political prosecution”.
“This is a … gross attempt at silencing dissent, a right protected under the first amendment. This case is yet another attempt by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish those who dare to speak up. That’s why I’m going to fight these unjust charges,” she said.
Abughazaleh added: “As I and others exercised our first amendment rights, ICE has hit, dragged, thrown, shot with pepper balls, and teargassed hundreds of protesters, myself included. Merely because we dared to assert that hooded individuals seizing our neighbors and frightening our community should not become routine.
“This prosecution aims at our freedoms to demonstrate, express opinions, and connect with those who oppose government actions … I’ve spent my career fighting America’s backwards slide towards fascism and I’m not going to give up now,” she continued.
Wider Implications
The charges emerge amid increased federal immigration operations in various left-leaning cities such as Chicago – an action that has drawn strong condemnation from regional and state officials.
These operations have faced broad resistance from citizens, Democratic members of Congress, and advocacy organizations, including the ACLU characterizing them as an expansion of a national paramilitary force intended to strengthen executive authority.
