The Japanese Economic Output Declines while Exports Face Impact by American Trade Duties
The Japanese economic system has recorded a drop for the initial time in six quarters, mainly driven by declining overseas shipments due to newly imposed US trade duties.
Group of Seven Economic Leaderboard
Japan stands as the first Group of Seven country to announce an output shrinkage in the previous quarter.
As the United States still needing to release its GDP figures for Q3 2025, the present Group of Seven economic rankings display:

Tourism Stocks Decline during Political Rift with China
Alongside the GDP decline, Japan is facing an intensifying diplomatic tension with China concerning Taiwan.
Shares in Japan's travel and consumer companies have declined noticeably after China urged its nationals to refrain from traveling to Japan.
This move by Chinese authorities escalated a diplomatic feud that was initiated by comments from Japan's new PM about the possibility of deploying troops in the event of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation led to a wave of selling across Japan's tourism-related shares.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3%
- The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory discouraging visits to Japan brings short-term headwinds for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, luxury retail, and hospitality particularly vulnerable."
GDP Decline Details
Japanese GDP declined by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as industrial exports were impacted by tariffs imposed by the US recently.
Exports were a key driver of the contraction, falling by 1.2% compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a the same period last year.
Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two countries concluded a trade agreement.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8% in the quarter through September.
"The Japanese economic situation was strong in the first half of this year and the latest GDP data showed that growth is paused for now.
I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a moderate recovery trend going forward."
The White House has lately recognized the effect of tariffs on US consumers, lowering duties on imported food products including beef, tomatoes, beverages and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
