The Reform UK leader Accuses Educators of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that teachers would go on strike within weeks a success at the polls for his party, accusing them of “harming young minds” by instructing children that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and white children oppressors.
During an event for a Michigan-based religious institution, Farage outlined his viewpoint on British schools, stating that the “radical left-wing” had “taken over schooling”.
“I’m anticipating a walkout by educators very quickly after securing a victory,” Farage commented in response to questions.
“They are poisoning our kids. They are telling them to be ashamed of their country. They are telling an eight-year-old black child that he is oppressed and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is an oppressor. They create division, not uniting us. They are feeding this harmful mindset.”
In response to these assertions, Daniel Kebede rejected the idea that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “absurd”. He pointed out that industrial action must relate to teachers’ terms and conditions, and questioned whether the party would target these right after taking office.
“Farage has built his public life on dog-whistle politics and currently, similar to other figures, he is lining up teachers and their unions for a fight,” the union leader said.
“This is highly reckless. Neither I nor our union – push critical race theory as he’s suggesting … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, particularly schooling … and he would be a disaster for students and learning.”
Reform, which is leading the polls by a significant margin, has not set out much detail on a proposed education policy and does not appear to have appointed an education spokesperson.
However, his comments indicated the group would reform the educational framework. He said: “We face an enormous task with education – truly monumental. And, we can’t do it in six months or a year; it will take us years, a long-term effort to reform.”
He stated that younger generations are receptive to critical thinking, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Paying tribute to a conservative activist, he commented: “All I want education to do to foster independent thought – to educate individuals that multiple perspectives exist and they should decide for themselves as opposed to what’s happening now where one is virtuous and one is evil. It’s a massive job in the UK and US.”
Reform has previously clashed with the UK’s largest teaching union, after Kebede called the party “far right and racist” and dismissed Farage as “a cheap imitation”.
Farage has accused the union head with being “a self-declared Marxist” … someone who is absolutely determined that our children should be poisoned through education, their thinking tainted regarding national issues” and maintained that the union is trying to indoctrinate teenagers against Reform.
Almost one million people are employed in education in the UK, with educators comprising half and the others teaching assistants and support staff. The leading teachers’ organization has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over educators’ salaries and work environment in 2023 caused widespread disruption in schools and millions of days of lost learning for students.
At the US event, Farage also vowed to promote the online educational material of the Christian college in the UK. He stated organizations like it were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I mean this. I will help garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of youth to your online courses. I make that commitment now and I will follow through.”
The institution, a religious educational establishment, offers free courses. According to its online description: “Comprehensive learning is necessary for personal happiness and to maintain the benefits of civil and religious liberty. The college furnishes these excellent programs for no charge to every interested learner.”
