UN Removes Restrictions on President of Syria Before White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

Security Council representatives gave the green light to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting the coming week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of domestic strife.

The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, previously associated with the terrorist network. The US removed the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and to friendly nations for assisting of Syria and its people."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week comes after US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

After the meeting, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The pair met initially this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the Middle East.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to America during this period. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
